If you ask me today what my most memorable underwater experience is, I’d probably tell you it was the whale swims in Tonga. Still to this day these are my number one!

These remarkable encounters offer but a glimpse into the awe-inspiring world of these magnificent creatures.

Swimming with a mother and calf, we witness the loving relationship between them, and if we look closely, we can see (or assume!) the lessons they teach.

In human form, a mother’s lessons never end. For humpback whale calves, they only have a year or so staying close to mumma before they become independent and take on the oceans with other whales. So, time to learn little one!

These lessons are critical for the calves survival and successful integration into the larger whale community. From the intricacies of swimming to the art of tail-slapping, from the nuances of feeding to the subtleties of communication, the mother serves as the ultimate mentor to her calf.

And I feel from this encounter this is what this image is showing us: the mother and calf’s intricate bond as they gracefully swim their way through the ocean.
